All-on-4 is one of the most common reasons people travel to the Algarve for dental treatment. A full arch of fixed teeth on just four implants, placed in a single surgery, at roughly half the price you would pay in the UK. But it is a significant procedure, and knowing what to expect before, during, and after makes the difference between a smooth experience and a stressful one.
What is All-on-4 and how does it work?
All-on-4 replaces an entire arch of teeth (upper, lower, or both) using four dental implants as anchor points. Two implants are placed straight at the front of the jaw, and two are placed at an angle towards the back. The angled placement gives the implants a stronger grip in the bone, which is why many patients who have been told they need bone grafting for traditional implants can still be candidates for All-on-4 without it.
A fixed prosthesis is attached to the implants on the same day as surgery. This is not a removable denture. It stays in your mouth, looks like natural teeth, and functions like them. You eat, speak, and smile normally from day one, although the foods you can eat are restricted during the healing period.
How much does All-on-4 cost in the Algarve?
In the Algarve, a full-arch All-on-4 treatment typically costs between 6,000 and 8,000 EUR per arch. In the UK or France, the same procedure starts from around 15,000 EUR. For both arches, the savings can reach 10,000 EUR or more, even after factoring in flights and accommodation.
The price depends on the implant brand, the material of the final prosthesis (acrylic is more affordable, zirconia is stronger and more natural-looking), and whether additional procedures like extractions or bone grafting are needed. Ask for a breakdown so you know exactly what each component costs.
What does the timeline look like?
All-on-4 in the Algarve usually requires two or three visits, spread over several months. Here is what a typical timeline looks like:
First visit (5 to 7 days). This is the main trip. It starts with a consultation and CT scan, followed by a treatment plan. If you go ahead, surgery is usually scheduled within a day or two. The four implants are placed, any remaining teeth are extracted, and a temporary fixed prosthesis is fitted the same day. You leave the clinic with a full set of teeth. The remaining days are for rest and a follow-up check before you fly home.
Healing period (3 to 6 months). You go home and let the implants fuse with the bone. This process is called osseointegration. During this time, you wear the temporary prosthesis. It is functional but not as durable as the final version. Your clinic will stay in touch by email or video call to check on your progress.
Second visit (3 to 5 days). Once the implants have fully integrated, you return to the Algarve for the final prosthesis. The dentist takes impressions, checks the fit, and attaches the permanent teeth. This is a shorter, less invasive visit.
Some patients need a third short visit if adjustments are required, but this is not common. Confirm the expected number of trips with your dentist before you start.
Who is a candidate for All-on-4?
All-on-4 is designed for people who have lost most or all of their teeth in one or both arches, or whose remaining teeth are too damaged to save. It is also a common solution for people who wear removable dentures and want a fixed alternative.
Because the implants are placed at an angle, All-on-4 can work even for patients with moderate bone loss. However, severe bone loss, uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking, or certain medical conditions may affect eligibility. A CT scan is the first step in determining whether you are a suitable candidate.
What can you eat after All-on-4 surgery?
For the first few weeks, you will need to stick to soft foods: soups, yoghurt, scrambled eggs, mashed vegetables, fish. No hard, crunchy, or sticky foods while the implants are healing. After four to six weeks, you can gradually return to a normal diet. Once the permanent prosthesis is fitted, there are very few restrictions. Most patients eat everything they did before they lost their teeth.
Why do people choose the Algarve for All-on-4?
Price is the obvious reason. But there are practical advantages too. Faro airport has direct flights from over 40 European cities, and most dental clinics in the Algarve are within 30 minutes of the airport. The recovery period between surgery and your flight home is spent somewhere warm, with good food and comfortable accommodation, rather than at home in grey weather.
All dentists in Portugal are registered with the Ordem dos Medicos Dentistas (OMD) and work under EU regulatory standards. The implant systems, materials, and surgical techniques used in the Algarve are the same as those used in the UK, Germany, or the Netherlands. The cost difference reflects lower overheads in Portugal, not lower standards.
What should you ask before committing?
Before you book anything, make sure you have clear answers to these questions:
- Which implant brand will be used, and what is the manufacturer warranty?
- What material is the final prosthesis (acrylic or zirconia)?
- How many visits are needed, and what is the expected timeline?
- What happens if there is a complication after you return home?
- Does the clinic offer remote follow-up between visits?
- Is the quote fully itemised, including extractions, temporary prosthesis, and all components?
Tell us what you need and we will connect you with a qualified dentist in the Algarve who can assess your case, explain the process in your language, and provide a detailed treatment plan with a written quote.
